The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru is nuanced and complex on the nose, with a mixture of yellow and white fruit, crushed stone and a faint oatmeal touch. It shows wonderful delineation and focus. The oak is nicely integrated here, though it is much more understated than Carillon's Les Combettes. The palate is well-balanced with a sheen of new oak that is perfectly proportionate to the fruit intensity underneath. Again, quite a spicy, almost peppery finish leaves the tongue tingling long after the wine has exited. Fresh and saline, this is a marvelous Les Combettes that should age well in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
